The seventh Edition kicks off: 2023 location has been unveiled

CASTELLO ERRANTE

From 29 September, the VII edition of the Residenza Internazionale del Cinema for the enhancement of Italian villages begins: the selected names have been announced.

Everything is ready for the seventh edition of Castello Errante. Residenza Internazionale del Cinema that promotes Italian villages and, above all, supports the audiovisual sector in an innovative way by focusing on a training and production experience for young aspiring directors, screenwriters, filmmakers, producers, and other industry professionals.

The format presents itself as a unique and unconventional training model that brings together Italian and Latin American students and professionals through a particularly stimulating working method that connects Italy and South America and promotes international exchanges.

The event will take place in two phases: the selected students through the calls that concluded on 15 August will be able to attend online screenwriting, directing, and communication lessons and masterclasses from 29 September to 16 October, and then in person from 1 November to 14 November in the chosen location for the 2023 edition: Contigliano (Rieti).

It is a medieval village of about 4,000 inhabitants, nestled in the forests of Sabina. In 2023, it received the “Borgo più cinematografico d’Italia” award at the Festival Cinematografico Borghi sul Set and was featured in The Times as a must-visit tourist destination for this year. Castello Errante  a hub dedicated to innovation in the audiovisual sector, based on international production experience and, at the same time, acting as a promotional route for Italian villages, allowing for interesting cultural and economic benefits in peripheral urban areas, has found the ideal location in this inland Lazio village.

If last year the idea was to stay somehow connected to the sea and the coast, using the theme of landing in the chosen graphic symbol of the initiative, this year Castello takes a turn towards the green forests of Sabina, as indicated by the new visual for this edition.

The artwork for 2023 symbolises a butterfly that encompasses all the meanings of the central theme for this edition: “meta.” The visual was created in collaboration between the project team and AANT – Academy of Arts and New Technologies of Rome.

In its first sense, the term “meta” tells of a change, a transformation, and therefore a metamorphosis. The metamorphosis of a living being or an object that takes on new forms. Its second sense is related to the concept of goal, target, and endpoint. The project is a goal for its participants, but it is also the tool that supports them in achieving their objectives. Finally, the word “meta” brings us back to the concept of the metaverse, particularly relevant today, and with this perspective, the project looks to the future, new technologies, and the possibilities to explore in the search for new artistic expressions of life and emotions.

Emphasising the innovation and the drive for change and experimentation in the 2023 edition of Castello Errante is Adele Dell’Erario, the Residency director: “2023 is the year when Castello sets itself in motion again after crossing the seas and pausing on the beaches awaiting the return of the storms. The journey resumes through the woods and unfamiliar lands of inland Italy, among arches, alleys, and silent abbeys, in the unexpected atmospheres of Sabina in Lazio.”

She added, “In these new scenarios, Castello leads its protagonists to talk about new goals, new languages, and the new frontiers of art. Once again, the project questions the milestones it intends to achieve, the space it wants to dedicate to avant-garde, and the ethics of progress as a key to wealth and emancipation. It will be an edition rich in novelties, experimentation workshops, collaborations with innovation-focused academies, observation and proposals, showcases dedicated to talents, and high-level training.”

Among the instructors participating in the project for 2023 is screenwriter and director Valia Santella, who will lead a screenwriting masterclass and a script analysis workshop selected for this year’s edition. Alongside her, the following will lead the lessons: Philippe Ros, a film director, digital image supervisor, consultant, instructor, and reader; film producer Edoardo Fracchia; Jorge Igual, a Telecommunications engineer who will handle technical lessons on digital image processing; and Katrin Richthofer, specialised in documentary directing and sustainability.

During the film festival NON E’ VERO (Fermo), the preview of HAZLO CINE was presented, the promotional video created during the fifth edition of the Residency held at the Santa Severa Castle. Directed by Isabel Barajas, the video fully embodies the nature and essence of our project, dedicated to the promotion of cultural diversity and our heritage through cinema and audiovisual content.

As for the screenplay, we received numerous high-quality submissions, thanks to its compelling narrative and interesting style, this year’s winning screenplay is “Andiamo Guerriero”, written by Vivian Barballushi and Laura Raccanelli. A special mention is given to the screenplay “Via del Principio Irreale”, written by Victor Laet, for the originality of the story.
